The Experience

My Approach

Instead of focusing on rules and more rules (to which there are plenty!) I prefer to scale back and simply show people how much fun a TTRPG (Table Top Role Playing Game) can be if you simply learn the basics, let lose and have fun. While I do and will teach the basic rules to anyone, I strongly believe it is more important to jump in head first and get a feel for what a TTRPG is all about.

My sessions can and usually do begin with a quick recap of what you need to know... similar to when you open up a new board game and just need someone to quickly show you what you can do.  However, I try to get you playing as quickly as possible so you can enjoy the time rather than sweat over the rules.  This approach is great for any casual gamer including but not limited to young kids who usually have a short attention span and just want to play!  This approach may not be for that gamer who has already played D&D or COC, but definitely perfectly suited to any teen or adult looking to get started.

My "Delivery"

In terms of how, where and when to play, I offer online games using a web link to a privately streamed game.  It is formatted to look and feel like you were taking part in an actual YouTube experience such as the popular web series "Critical Role". Each player will receive a unique invite to join and will have their faces displayed with their names and character names beneath their video. This way, everyone can see each other and can easily identify who is speaking and what their names / characters names are.  It's an extremely fun experience which is further enhanced with ambient sounds, background music as well as maps and other hand outs (all digitally provided).

For in person games, I have a dedicated game room built for this reason. It is comfortably large for up to 6 players. I have tons of miniatures and 3d terrain and other goodies to add to the fun. As for immersion, it continues with ambient music and sounds, perhaps some dim lights when the mood calls for it.

Some requirements

For online play, I usually I like to do a quick 'tech check' several hours or a day ahead of time, with each individual to make sure there are no technical hiccups on the day we play. You will need to make sure you have the following requirements...

  • A modern computer capable of running a webcam
  • A decent webcam
  • A headset (an absolute necessity to avoid sound feedback!)
  • A mic (good to have a hard MUTE button as well)
  • A background clear of any potential distractions
  • Dice (digital dice can be used - I will provide links if needed, or purchase links as well)

For in person play all I ask is that you be healthy (i.e. no signs of sickness/covid/cold), respectful of the room and it's contents and bring your own drinks/snacks. No need for dice if you don't have. I can provide it too!

Everything else is provided including a premade character sheet, however, if you would like the extra experience of creating your own character from scratch, then we can work out a separate session to do so. Also, if you already know how to create one, or have a character ready, you can simply submit it for approval ahead of time.

The Cost?

I like to keep it simple so I will simply ask for a donation of 5$ or more per player to my Patreon or direct to me via PayPal. If you don't like what was presented or feel it wasn't worth it then pay nothing. If you enjoy it then I've succeeded and the money goes back into my ability to host more games be it online or in person.  There is a substantial cost to me to do what I do and in reality it would be far more than 5$ per person, but I leave that up to each player for now.  Every DM chooses how much to invest and I go above and beyond to give more of an experience to my players.
